DSM Contract Lifting needed to lower an 800kg commercial clay oven into the kitchen basement of the brand-new NoMad Hotel in Central London. Thanks to the versatility of the REID PORTAGANTRY, the task was made much easier.

The background

In the heart of Covent Garden, the historic grade II listed building which was once The Bow Street Magistrates’ Court and Police Station is being converted in the first NoMad Hotel outside of the United States. Commercial catering equipment had to be lowered from the ground floor to the kitchen basement, along with a cherry picker required for the interior transformation of the building.

The challenge

With the kitchens located in the basement of the new hotel, the task of lowering the equipment from the ground floor above called for a gantry solution which could work across two levels and in a fairly restricted space. The requirement was for a moveable Gantry which could accommodate both the 5.5m height and the 800kg weight.

The SOLUTION

DSM Contract Lifting Services, who were moving the catering equipment, contacted REID’s channel partner Ritelift for advice on the best gantry solution for the task. The team at Ritelift recommended a combination of two 3000kg PORTAGANTRY A-Frames, one assembled to the maximum 5.5m height in the basement and one assembled to 2m on the ground floor above, with an 8.4m beam coupling the two together. Two standard trollies were also supplied, along with trolley rope control systems. The solution was assembled quickly and easily in the hotel by the team at DSM and worked perfectly, with the oven and cherry picker safely lowered into the basement in a matter of minutes. Ritelift used all their knowledge and experience of REID products to recommend coupling two PORTAGANTRY systems together on this project. Because the system allows for beams and A-frames to be interchanged, it was possible to put together a bespoke solution using two standard Gantries from the range they hold in stock.

The feedback

Melvyn Rogers, Managing Director of DSM Contract Lifting Services said:

Nice to work with a company who have a massive variety of REID gantries. Ritelift were extremely helpful in coming up with a solution. They always provide us with excellent customer service and technical support. Highly recommend their service and assistance.”
