Versatile lifting solution for on board ship
The versatility of the PORTAGANTRY system means it can be used for lifting and lowering a whole variety of loads on the deck of oil tankers, while remaining stable.
The background
Carl Büttner Shipmanagement GmbH operates a fleet of oil tankers. They needed a gantry lifting solution for the decks of four of their ships, which can be used for lifting and lowering everything from machinery to pumps - both when the tankers are docked and when they are out at sea.
The challenge
The fleet owners needed a gantry solution which was stable enough to work on deck, portable enough to be packed away neatly when not required, and durable enough to withstand the harsh environment at sea. They also needed a manoeuvrable system which could be moved under load around the deck, but which would remain secure and stable at all times.
The SOLUTION
Via our channel partner Bruno Glettenberg GmbH, REID Lifting DACH supplied individual PORTAGANTRY systems for each of the four ships.
These can be packed away in a storage room when not in use, but quickly and easily assembled on deck to meet virtually any lifting requirement. Working closely with Bruno Glettenberg GmbH, our team in Germany recommended a PORTAGANTRY solution which they judged would give the crews on board as much flexibility as possible.
This comprised a Tall PORTAGANTRY A-frame with a WLL of 2000kg and a 4570mm wide beam and master link trolley. Amongst the key benefits of the REID system are lockable castors which make the gantry easy to move around on deck, even under load, and height adjustability up to a maximum lifting height of 3.5m.
The PORTAGANTRY beam has holes along it’s length which allows for the A-frames to be assembled inboard the beam. This reduces the width of the gantry to allow for the system to fit into areas on the deck which have limited space.
Also significant is the fact that the UK manufactured REID solution is manufactured in highly durable aluminium, so will not corrode even in harsh sea air. It is also ATEX Zone 2 approved.
The feedback
The REID PORTAGANTRY system is flexible, cost effective and is ideal for on board ship. The system is easy to assemble and move around the ship and is proving to be a useful addition to the fleet.
